A closer look at the app, the systems I owned, and the features behind it.
What the game is
- A story-driven Metroidvania with interconnected worlds, exploration, combat, and a progression system built around new abilities.
- Three explorable worlds - a cave, a forest, and a cathedral - connected by a world map rather than a linear level list.
- Two to three hours of gameplay, four boss fights, and a choice between embracing humanity or monstrosity.
What I built
- Built all of the levels and most enemies and boss fights; designed the progression systems, world challenges, character abilities, and a Boss Keys-style map of the world progression.
- Built the boon and vault systems that gate progress on abilities the player has found.
- Built the enemy roster as individual behaviors - chargers, rollers, hoppers, shooters, ghosts, spiders, slimes - rather than one configurable enemy.
Project team and assets
- Created hundreds of hand-drawn sprites and worked with the team to produce the game's original visual and musical assets.
- More than 12 original songs, written for the game by a friend on the team.
- Built with parallax backgrounds, camera bounds per room, campfire save points, NPC dialogue, and scripted cutscenes.
